The majority of the Republic of South Africa and specifically Natal has an exceptionally high number of lightning strikes per annum.
Figures from the CSIR confirm that 98% of electronic equipment that is damaged by lightning is as a result of an induced or indirect strike.
The energy resulting from an induced or indirect strike can in many instances be diverted away from electronic equipment by the use of lightning protection devices provided the earthing is acceptable.
Alpha Power has earth resistivity meters to check earthing as well as a full range of lightning protection products.
Lightning Protection Products
Power Input Protection
a) Primary Protection: Sometimes called coarse protection, this protection is fitted into either
distribution boards or sub stations. This protection absorbs the majority of the energy from
an indirect lightning strike.
b) Secondary protection takes over from where the coarse protection ended and absorbs
the balance of the energy.
c) It is thus important that in areas of high lightning incidence both primary and secondary protection
is installed.
Data Equipment
Alpha Power has lightning protection devices to protect sensitive electronic equipment such as modems, and network cards.
Telephone Equipment
Lightning Protection devices for PABX systems as well as stand alone phones are available.
Specialised Equipment
Alpha Power also has a range of lightning protection devices for industrial electronic equipment such as 20ma loop protectors.
